I was curious, I've read a ton of posts about this, but I am stilled confused a little. Once I drain my block, do I pull my plugs and then spray fogging oil into the plug holes? I do have a manual, but I am at the office and I am trying to get this fixed in my head before getting into the boat tonight. Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Re: How to Fog Your Motor

It's best to run the motor on muffs or in the water until it's warm and slowly pour fogging oil (4oz for 4-cyls, 6oz for 6-cyls, 8oz for V-8s) into the throat of the carb. As soon as the oil is in, close the choke butterfly until the motor kills. Then give it full throttle and start it briefly, shutting it off before the revs get too high. Then drain the block, maniflods, pumps, and coolers.

It's also a good idea to change oil when winterizing. If you leave it in there until spring, contaminants settle to the bottom where they stay until you pour nice fresh oil over it and run the motor. That instantly puts all the contaminants from last year into next year's oil.

I use the fogging oil spray can. I run the motor at a fast idle, about 1000 rpm, and slowly spray the oil in until the exhaust starts to get real good and smokey. Then I have someone reduce the idle and spray the oil full force down the carb until the motor dies.

Then I drain the water from the block and exhaust manifolds, don't forget to drain the steering fluid cooler. Change the oil. Then put the boat away until next spring.

DO any of you ever find the fogging oil in your oil in the spring?

This is what I found in my boat when I bought it, or something similiar.....it was tan and smelled like gas......

I use the spray too (I often wondered if its WD40 as it smells just like it). I spray down the carb but usually have trouble getting the engine to choke and die from it. I take out all plugs and spray in all cylinders for 10sec. Then with the plugs out I turn the engine over a few times to coat everything in the cylinder. Install the plugs and thats it.

Transmission fluid is a good alternative to fogging oil. We use it all the time.
