I have a 1987 Bayliner 17' Bow Rider.Engine is a 2.3LR 110h.p. 4 Cylinder ”Ford” I/O with the o.m.c cobra outdrive. What should my spark plugs be gapped to? i already installed my new spark plugs but i didn't gap them. Do they come pre gapped? or i have to gap them myself?

Sometimes the gap they come with is correct, but usually some will be out. It's always best to check them all. I don't know the spec for your engine but someone here will...

Here's a picture that shows a couple of important things - be sure to turn the engine over till the cam that operates the points is at the highest location and the points are wide open. (This is shown in the picture).

Then use your feeler gauge and adjust the gap of the points till the gap is correct. Usually .018 - .022 - in that range. Note in this picture the feeler gauge is being used.

Re: How to Gap Spark Plugs?

I just changed plugs yesterday. 3 out of the 4 had to be opened up .005. Never run a plug out of the box. It only takes a few seconds and a gap tool to ensure they are correct.

For the fuel pump, get a pressure gauge (auto stores have then), disconnect the fuel line after the pump (normally at the carb. fitting) and connect it to the gauge. Crank the engine and read the gauge.

also good to check vacuum on the intake side of the pump.. might have a restriction there vs. a bad pump.. bad anti-siphon valve is a common and easy fix that can cause ya some fuel flow problems...

and you should always gap the plugs.. they are rarely gapped right out of the box ive found at least.
