Re: how to get gimbal bearing out ??

I found that a slide hammer was NOT effective at all when I did my pre-alpha. I was sure the brg. was seized really tight when i tried slide hammering it- I was all worried I was going to have to move the engine, but it turns out it wasnt seized at all.

I found some long carriage bolts (not even good quality ones) and used them with an old puller plate. The smooth easy pressure of winding the nuts in on the 2 carriage bolts pulled the thing out smooth as butter. I forget what I jammed in between the 2 bolts to keep them out under the bearing's inner race <--> I think I stuck a heel bar or something down in between them.

It was puzzling... I was really wailing hard on the slide hammer and the thing didn't budge. I don't know what absorbs the impacts...somethin'

what year ?, some early drives used a snap ring to hold the bearing in place,if there is no grease fitting for the gimbal ,its very early. all others have a grease fitting for the bearing on the right side

oops, sorry about the above screw up.

Hi Tom,

You are most likely going to have to drill 1/8th holes all around the bearing. Space the holes apart,(about the thickness of a drill bit or a little bigger) Then use the slide hammer to remove the bearing. When you drill, be careful not to drill into the black seal that the bearing fits into.

Contact me if you need more info.
I have had to do this at work twice this week!

Scott

most slide hammers have a fine thread 1/2-20 or 5/8-18

you can pick up a fine threaded rod at the hardware store and some nuts

then all you need to do is put the slide hammer parts on the rod and a steel bar across the houseing and you have a puller ;) which will work much better

tommays

I am with tommays
I have a stainless rod that fits my puller head and a piece of 1/2" plate. the plate goes acrossed the face of the bell housing and pulls the stubborn ones. usually the slide hammer pops them out but sometimes I have to resort to the slow but sure methods. uses a large flat wahsher and some grease under the puller nut.
