I got lazy last year and did not clean up the hull and motor ( merc I/O).

Since the hull is white, don't notice the 'white stuff' on it, but the I/O is different. Any good stuff out there to clean it up, and not lose the paint on it?

Will waxing the hull and motor helpfor next time? ( It sits on a lift during the summer and only sees brown river water - They say this is a lake, but I think these people here don't know what a lake is!) I have to tell stories to my kids that there are things called lakes, and there is water where you can see more then 2mm below the surface.

I never had this problem back home! :D

I think this happens almost everywhere. I get it here in MN and WI lakes and an occasional trip to the Mississippi River.

Clean the outdrive with some toilet bowl cleaner. It won't hurt the paint. There is also a product called On-Off (I think that's the name) made specifcally for this, but toilet bowl cleaner works very well and is much cheaper. If the "crusties" are really bad, you can scrub with a soft bristle brush. Be sure to wear safety goggles, rubber gloves, and old clothes. Don't let the cleaner dry before rinsing completely with water. Let the rinse job dry.

Final step is to wax. This helps keep that stuff off. For the hard to reach areas, I just use a foaming spray wax that you rinse off with water. I usually do this whole process once or twice per season.

Another thing that I found to keep the motor clean is to wipe it down with a clean towel after each use. My boat is trailered and wiped down every time when removed from the water.

Maybe some others will share their methods.

Just to add to sangerwakers post, use gel toiletbowl cleaner if you can find it, and try to keep it off your rubber boots.I use nylon kitchen scouring pads, instead of a brush.

Jim

I have used the product called ON-OFF, works real good. Thick formula bowl cleaner called LIME-A-WAY is available in the grocery store. fred

I recommend products from Larsensales.com They have a line of cleaning products that are made for cleaning boats. I use the Wonderfoam to clean the hull. It also does an awesome job removing the mineral deposits from your outboard. I then use their Restore product to polish it up. Here is a link showing what I was up against. I also used the BioZyme to clean my livewell after I forgot about and left nightcrawlers in the livewell in 90 degree heat. It took the smell out, I'm sold on their products.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v453/fishinaddiction/PDC_0087.jpg

Thanks all:

I should suspect using toilet bowl cleaner - the water around here sometimes looks ( and smells) like one!

Actually, Someone gave me a bottle of Zing! When I put it on the I/O, it starting smoking when it hit the calcium!. It sure cleaned it up. I also diluted it and it cleaned the bottom up real good. ( just dont breath it in!)

Now I have a clean hull, next is the wax.

Is turtle wax OK? I have some left over ( The liquid stuff)?

Is it a chalky white film on your outdrive? If it is, that means the casing of the drive is so hot it is boiling off the water that is splashed onto it while you're cruising or plunged into cool water when your boat comes off plane. You may need to install an Outdrive Shower. It will dramatically reduce the temperature and wear and tear on your outdrive as well of getting ride of the chalky film.

I see Larsen sales is listed above. Thats me. I do sell some of the best boat cleaning products sold. Restore and Wonderfoam are the most popular second to none. Go to http://www.walleyecentral.com, do a search on restore and wonderfoam and read some of the posts about my product. It tells it all and saves me a lot of typing. I will go one step further. I will offer any member of this site one buck off per bottle (3 or more bought) for call in orders only. 989-837-2681 Thanks Skeeter
