Changing the cap and rotor. Tried to pull the rotor off and it won't budge. Do I have to destroy it to get it off? I hate breaking things and hate risking breaking something else! 1989 4.3 Alpha Thunderbolt. Thanks!

I cut down both sides with a Dremmel and then pry open with a screwdriver. When installing, skip the glue.;)

Yeah.....

If you're reading the Mercury service manual they'll tell you to use Loctite (red I think) to "glue" it on. Most people skip that step so they don't have to break it off the next time!!

A "good" way to break it is to use a fairly large pair of Visegrips or a small vise... You probably shouldn't hit it with something unless you remove the dist and can hold the rotor "between a hammer and a hard place" and then tap very carefully! I don't like hammering on "things anyway!

Using a small grinder is pretty good....just don't grind on thru it and into the actual shaft!!

Cheers,

Rick

Thanks for all the great ideas guys! Tried the vise grips, couldn't get enough mustard on it, broke out the dremel, zipped the sides and that did the trick! Sure enough, bits of super glue in there. New one on, no glue! Thanks again!

Two screw drivers under it on both sides, all the way to the distributor shaft, then leverage up against it and it pops right up.

I also skipped the lock tight on my re-install.

Heat, if you have a decent heat gun, once it hot enough, pops off using your hand, no tools.
