Got this area thats black and its got this whitish hue to it.
i have tried to use the 3M Marine "One Step" Fiberglass Restorer and Wax
as you can see thats in pic 1 but still not good enough.

on pic 2 you can see i tried to sand with DA sander but used 150grit i think and it just put big scratches in there.
edit: actually i think i used 80 grit not 150grit. so that was not a good idea.

Also another question...how do i get to washing where the bunks lie. i was thinking to jack the bow up by putting some blocks down and use a 2*4 but that was not working to well.
i tried to wash with hull cleaner but it took too much of scrubbing so i just ended up DA sanding the entire bottom with 80grit.
now i am not 100% what to do as i am not really planning to bottom paint it.
this is a 16ft boat so how much bottom paint would i need? i have one can which is 0.946L of bottom paint (micron CSC). Well its not really full so i think there is 3/4 left in there. is this enough?? how many coats are you supposed to do?
I also have interluxe brightside polyurethane (one quart) can i use this perhaps?

Wow 80 grit is entirely to rough to sand a hull that will not be painted. Try to wetsand those scratches out with 400 grit and work your way to 1000 then try buffing. If you do not leave your boat in the water the Briteside will work on the bottom of the hull. I would sand and buff that puppy, gel will last much longer than paint.

for the hull the dirt was just stuck so i had to sand with 80. i was thinking to sand now with 150 or 220. then i can use the compound and then wax it. do you think this is good enough?

were you talking about the bottom here? if so what grit now? or as you said should i just wetsand the way you said above for the bottom too and buff?

I mean the whole boat. Never sand with less than 400 if you plan to buff a hull. As far as that crud on the hull I have used the cheapest oven cleaner I can find or a good hull cleaner to get it off. Sanding and dirt is a recipe for disaster.

proshadetree is right. I started with 400 and went up from there. You cannot even start with compound until you get to around 1500 grit.

Re: how to get this to a shine

any ideas of how to get under the damn bunks?
i have decided to just paint the bottom with interluxe brightside polyurethane. the boat is just on trailer so i think that will be ok.
now interms of prep..so far as i said its sanded with 80grit. is that good enough and i can start the paint job now? or should i up the sanding with a higher grit then paint.

To answer the unanswered question of how to get to the spots under the bunks. You need to learn how to fly the hull or.... you can do it this way.

1. Lower the front of the trailer down as far as it will go.
2. Place two boat stands at the transom.
3. Raise the front of the trailer until the boat is slightly above level.
4. Place a third boat stand under the keel.

If you have a 5 ton bottle jack and a block of wood you can then jack it up by the keel and move the front stand so as to facilitate the removal of the trailer completely.

When your done it will look like this ...

Re: how to get this to a shine

hey.
thanks for the details on how to get it of the trailer.
i found a good way. see pics.
i borrowed a 2ton lift and just hoisted it up from the back one side at a time. i had enough of clearance to clean it.

You still plan on Doing the Brightside paint on the whole bottom ? .. If so then the suggestion given already about shoring the boat would be a better suggestion for your task..

Jack the back..then lift the front..remove trailer ..block and jack the front and continue with the prep and paint..

Yes you need better then 80 grit for prep for Paint.. 220 at least depending on the product..

I hope that ring on the transoms strong. Most are not backed enough for lifting. I would put something in there in case it pulls out and you're not bunk-pinched.............A 4x4 or something.

Hey.
well i guess the ring on the transom was good...it didn't snap or anything.

i am to pull the trailer out with the car? i was thinking that if you pull the trailer, wont the blocks or stand that i can make shift as you pull the trailer out? i am working on a slight slope too so not sure about that. i was just going to use that hoist and paint under bunks first then once its not tacky i will lower it down.

Re: how to get this to a shine

So i painted the bottom, sides and transom with Interlux Brightside. I used foam roller and brush. I had to rol and tip as this stuff really really makes bubbles so you gotta smooth it down. It really looks good so far and i like the results. Its shiny and i am happy with it. I wish i had some black too so that i can paint the black areas but since i have the glasstream sticker and some pine stripes it would be a pain to work around that. I dont have the option to take the sticker out.
Anyhow i will go for another coat and see how it turns out. There were some chips that i filled with water tight epoxy and i sanded them down but even after the paint went on that it just wasn't flush enough so you can still see the marks where the chips were. i know this is not the right way to do this but i just gave it a go and see what happens. i think a few more coats will make them go away a little more so it will be hardly noticeable from some distance.
I will post some pics on here on Tuesday.

Re: how to get this to a shine

went to check 24hrs later.
there are alot of lines/streaks that you can see from the foam brush. i dont like it at all. i mean you can really see streaks so i am hoping that with another coat with roll and tip method will eliminate the lines.
forgot camera so i will have to take pics tomorrow before i hit the second coat

second coat is on now.
i took the camera to realize the memory card isn't there. so no pics.

question....
i am to just wax the bottom now after new paint and thats all there is to it? or should i be doing compound and wax it? ?

Well I dont know about Brightside but I do know that if you "wax" awlgrip it will void the warranty. They recommend a sealer ( there brand is Awlcare ).

Personally I think waxing or sealing a bottom is a waste. First couple times out running your boat I think would strip that off..

Normally..after shooting it..nothing..

Roll and tip .. ? hmm.. you can possibly sand and/or buff and apply a sealer. .. or just use the sealer ( I dont know how long it will last though.
