As the Temps increase in AZ and the snow is gone, I want to hit the lakes as early as possible. So here is the problem. I ready to head out to the lake at 5:00am but my wife and boys 8, 13, 16 struggle to get out of bed. I keep saying over and over again lets go, Lets go and its becomes a battle to get them out the door by 6:00am.

Anyone else have this problem getting the family motivated to go boating. Once they are out in the open water they have a great time. I do not want to become a solo boater because I love spending my time on the lake with them.

Oh if we do not get out there early enough they will complain that its too hot. :p :p

Wow, 5:00 AM....I thought only fisherman were out that early. I love boating, but you wouldn't catch me getting up that early to head out. No knock on you for wanting to do that, but as someone that doesn't like getting up early, I can sympathize with your family. Good luck!

Yes 5:00am. Wishful thinking with my Family. When its 90+ outside temp at 5:00am you want to get out there early before it hits 110. OK we are not there temp wise yet but I'm speaking what occured last summer.

Get out there the night before and call it a camping trip.

Cold Water or Garden hose is what I'm thinking.

Hire a USMC Boot Camp Gunny to roust them out. Guaranteed results, though you may need to deal with a rebellion afterward.

Reprogramming people's biological clocks is a major challenge, Dreamer. They aren't lazy, just doing what their bodies demand. Could you be just a bit more reasonable??

Maybe. I program differnt then they are. I get up for work at 4:30am and out the door by 5:30am. So getting up to go boating early is just normal time for me.

OK here is the bottom line.

I want to get out there early and leave early before the Heat arrives. I'm not just being a Jerk. Well Maybe.

if thats your boat in the pic get it on the lake yourself and have a bit of fun and let them get there at a certain time that suits them all.if that happens to be 3 in the afternoon take a coolbox and crack the fishing rods out stick some tunes on and chill out as you won't be getting ear ache.

I used to try that, after 3 or 4 years I've changes tactics. We get to the lake about 1pm, when its nice and roasting, it feels good, we get our swimming and tubing in in the heat of the day, then as it cools off and the lake calms its time to fish, relax and watch the amimals, then its a lot easier on us to load and get out after the early people have gone for the day. Strategy B is camping out!
And by the way, we dont adjust our clocks here (AZ), it daylight and already warming up at 5am!

I also have a 16 y/o son, and our boat is on a lift a couple hundred feet from his bed. He hasn't been on it before 10:30 yet.

Good luck.

Options as I see it:

1) Get used to going solo.
2) Compromise and go a little later.
3) Find another admiral (the boys you can train).
4) Use bribery.

FWIW, I have always been an early riser - even on weekends; the admiral not so much. I have always been ready to go (anywhere) early; the admiral not so much. I have spent the better part of the last 40 years (married for 38 of those) waiting on her. Two things that I know for sure.....(1) it ain't gonna change anytime soon and (2) she is well worth the wait......

Good luck.

Set the time to leave, if they aren't ready, leave 'em.

Mom wakes the kids at 6:00am and leaves for work at 6:45am. If the kids aren't ready for their ride to school at 7:00am on the dot, I leave them behind and they have to walk 3 miles. It has only happened once.

I think you're being a bit nuts. 5am is WAY too early to be expecting anyone but yourself to be up.

I wake up at 6am everyday and am active by 630. However, I would never expect anyone else to be doing anything with me.

You need to wake up, go clean the boat, have breakfast alone on the boat and then when your fam is ready to be picked up- you go and get them.

Otherwise the boat will just be a rift between you and your fam, and that's not what a boat should ever be.

Jeffski has it right. If you make boating a chore, you will not be raising a family of boaters; you will drive them away from it. In fact, when you start a family boating, you bend over backwards to make it fun for them, not you, so they will get interested.

I recall that you are pretty, um, "particular" about stuff you do before boating. Do you make them do that, too? At 5:00 am? I see a future of solo boating in your life.

I can't imagine getting up at 5 to go ride around in a boat to be home by 11. Not worth it. I get up at 5 in freezing storming weather to go out in small boats in the dark to go hunting, and I might get up at 5 to catch the right tide fishing, but to me, a boat is a means to an end, almost mere transportation, not an end in itself.

In principle, I understand your perspective. As an outdoorsman and as a traveller I know the value and importance of early starts, and t galls me to no end that my all-female family puts sleeping late as a priority over everything. By not understanding the concept of "choice" they are unable to do a lot of things, and they waste a lot of my time. But they are griping about an 8:00 start. Your 5:00 just to ride around is unreasonable IMO. Go alone and have them catch up, so what if it's hot. If it's too hot, move to Virginia.

5am? I'd get my butt kicked if I tried to get everyone out of bed that early for boating. We usually try to be at the ramp by 10:30 so that the slots are not full but not so early that going out on teh weekend becomes "work". It's 100 degrees here and the kids are playing soccer in an hour, being out in the boat sounds great ;)

OK I like getting out there early for several reasons. Heat, Perfect Sking Water, Less Boat Traffic.

Boating Solo Not an option.
New Wife and Family No way.

Be more Flexible and understanding, I will Try.

I am an early riser , and I have always wondered why anyone would want to sleep away the time they have off from work... I just don't get it...

I'll lose sleep to fish any day of the week- no question, but I will NOT lose any sleep on a boat ride. Keep it light, keep it fun, heat is the best part of boating and tubing. Best ski water is early morning, but it's also later when everyone's calmed down in the evening. I think if you keep rousting them at 5 a.m. sooner or later they're gonna tell you to go pound sand.
