I am ready to install the lower unit of my 1975 85 hp Johnson, I have an extra long bolt I have inserted in the rear bolt hole of the foot to hold the foot while getting everything else aligned. My main concern is I can not see or feel the water tubes to get them to go into the holes in the top of the water pump. I read somewhere that the tubes slide down, is this true, if not how are the tubes lined up?

If the tubes don't pull down, is there something i can slide up around the tubes that will slide up and align the tubes into the holes?

One more question, the shift rod housing has oil in it, is that the same oil as in the gear case? If so, what keeps water out of the oil there. Water can go into the oil through the shift rod.

There are two plastic guides that go into the pump housing, then it is easy to enter the tubes into the guides. Look at the water tubes, the guides are probably shinnied up them a way. Just pull them off. There is an o-ring around the shift rod. Or at least there is supposed to be. Part number 318372 (18-7137 here at iboats). Yes that is gear oil in there.

F_R thank you so much, you just don't know how much I appreciate this bit of fantastic information, this will save me from having to reinvent the wheel. LOL I had planned to get two short sections of pipe the size of the outside of the two protrusions on top of the pump housing, slide over the water pipes then pull down and install the foot.

Where are the "O" rings located on the shift rod, top or inside the case? I will check that out to see, I was wondering how the water was kept out of the oil. My foot must have too much oil in it because it is right at the rim of the shifter area in the low profile motor, my parts motor it wasn't that full.

Thank you so much again, you just made my day.

It's been a few years since I've had one apart, but I think the o-ring is in a groove in the cap that the shift rod goes through. The oil should be full to the level of the vent screw on the side.

F_R, I dropped the foot again today and you are dead on, the plastic tubes were indeed there, I pulled them down and inserted into the top of the water pump and the foot slid back up perfectly. I checked the "O" ring today and it is below the brass bushing so it was still intact and in good shape, I was a little concerned about that but not now.

Fired the old girl up today and she runs and shifts out perfectly. I can't begin to thank you for helping me with my problem, you made my job much much easier. Thank you ever so much again.
