I have a 1962 Evinrude 75HP outboard. The boat I own has a teleflex rack system. The outboard that was not sold with the boat had the tube type steering system. My motor does not. The cable on the teleflex system is siezed. I will be replacing it.
Question is how does the steering cable attach to the outboard? I know how it attaches to the transom.

Here is a pic of the steering hook up that my outboard has. I have the bracket that the pulley cables would have attached to. Does the teleflex cable bolt through one of the holes on this bracket or do I need a different bracket? Does teleflex carry these?
I now know that what I'm looking for is a clevis adapter. Still don't have a source. Teleflex doesn't have them.

The system shown in the ad is the old cable/pulley system. Have one my old boat.

Many, many thousands of these have been converted to Teleflex-style systems over the years, so adapters were made.

You might ask at older marinas, chances are that mechanics there may be able to find a new or used adapter for you.

Teleflex do make an adaptor.. just put one on my boat... (72 model motor, same situation.)

I can find the part number if you like..

cost me $80 AUD.. has a tube the cable fits into.. and a bracket on a ball joint that bolts to the transom with the tube locked into it..

There is another one for boats with narrow splashwells that is much neater..
it fits into the whole where the current cables come out.
the new cable will fit into this and lock in place.

both versions also have a bracket that goes between the cable and the steering arm on the motor, that allows the motor to tilt without bending the end of the steering cable...

rgds

Franki

Frankie,

If you have the teleflex part number for the piece that actually attaches to the motor...bolts to the handle somehow that would be great.

The piece I have is identical to the one in the picture for pulley steering. I do have access to the circular rubber mounting part that goes into the splashwell (mine is narrow enough to use it).

Could you take a few pics of the setup you have to help me picture it.

Look at all the baits!!

Snapper...no through tube on this old a motor...thanks for tryin though.

Crab...I frequent Hamilton's...I talked to them first. I think they have some stuff that I could make work. I do know that evinrude made a bracket for these motors...One old Evinrude shop owner said "yeah, we had those, but I haven't seen one in a long time."

Thanks all!

No dude, you missed it.. That is a tube.. Look a little closer... It bolts to the transom right in front of the motor... ;) i
