I have a 1961 crestliner falcon..14 feet with a 1970 40 hp evinrude. It was in the boat house for 30 or so years....The original speedometer front plastic cover was filthy so i cleaned it up...Do you think i could replace the plastic with a glass one...Either way it dosnt seem to work. What is the basic concept in hooking a vintage or new one up....there is some type of hook at the transome and a dirty old hose attached.

Those speedometers work off water pressure. The pick up that is mounted on the bottom of the transom picks up water and the pressure operates the spedo. You must have a clear tube and pick up for it to work. You can also blow compressed air into it to check it...carefully.

Wow that was quick....I guess the first thing in the spring will be to replace the tubing ( any ideas on size? ) and push the pivot down....its now parallel with the boat. Any thoughts on the likely hood the original speedometer will still work? Its never been damages but has been sitting for years.
