Probably can't, the internals is what changes.

You can't. Marine block numbers are not unique. The marinization was done by outside companies such as: PCM, Invader, MerCruiser, OMC and even Chrysler.

Re: how to identify ford marine block

I went and looked at the boat today, I have a quick question about some transmission issues. First off I own a 1968 marinette with a velvet drive and a 318 chrysler. The boat we went to look at was for a friend the question I have, is when the gear shifter is placed in forward the boat goes into reverse with no noise, when the shifter is placed into reverse the boat goes forward but with the whine that all velvet drives make in reverse but on this boat it is in forward it is whining, the boat originally had a chrysler engine would the change over from a forward block, alter the transmission to turn backwards? I am at a loss, as to what we should over on this boat.

Thanks, Thad

Ford did make reverse rotation engines in 5.0L, 5.8L and 7.5L (latest).

DJ is there any easy identification method to see if this motor is reverse rotation, if it was reversed would this be the reason for this?

Sounds like somebody has replaced the engine with one of opposite rotation.
check the numbers on the transmission to see which is in the boat. You can then go here to match them up.

Standing at the flywheel end if the engine is turning in a clockwise direction it is a righthand rotation engine the opposite of course is left hand or commonly referred to as automotive rotation.

Velvet drive says do not run the 71C/72C in reverse for extended periods. But you need to also check to see which rotation the propeller is to make sure it matches the transmission output (or what the output is supposed to be).

DJ, he changed questions in mid thread, he is now asking about a 318 Chrysler ................ I think.

Anyway, here is standard rotation.

No. The block ID numbers do not denote that. An engine tag-might.

The only difference in rotation change was: camshaft, oil pump (some).

Check Don S' diagram. If you can spin the engine, that will tell you.
