I inherited a 6hp Johnson, model CD-25R. The pole rope mechanism inside had been taken off and it was laying inside the motor with the rope still attached and I'm not sure how it goes back on. It has a spring at the bottom and I'm not sure how to insert the unit into it's proper position. I know when I pull on the rope the gear at the top of the rope mechanism is pushed up to the flywheel to turn it by the spring at the bottom. I think once I get the spring insert correctly it will work. Any ideas?

Thanks

Howdy RADAR.

Your 1968 Johnny 6hp is covered in several available manuals.

Anyone who works on an outboard without a manual is asking for trouble. Get a manual.

Good luck. :)

This is a fairly easy job. First take the rope off the rewind gear. The spring
has a small tab at one end. This tab fits into the slot in the bottom of the rewind housing(you wiil have to loosen the bottom plate on the housing, there are two 5/16 bolts). Once you get the spring inserted properly tighten the plate. Then put the rewind gear back on ( the part you wind the rope around) and bolt it down. Don't forget the small rod that sits in the holes and acts as a rope guide. Now comes the fun part. It helps to have another person. See the slot on top of the pinion gear? Get a scredriver wide enough to fit it. Then just keep turning it counterclockwise maybe a dozen or so turns. Don't let go or it will unwind and you'll have to strat all over again. When you think it is tight enough have your helper tie the string back on the starter. Make the knot small so it will fit by the rope guide. Then slowly unwind the pinion gear and guide the rope into the grooves on the gear. I have a service manual and will email you pics if you need it. Hope this helps.
