How to Install a pulse fuel pump on AD-11 outboard motor?

I am wanting to change over my old Johnson Sea Horse 7.5hp AD-11 from the current pressurized gas tank set up to a new modern single line fuel system. I understand this can be done with a few modifications. I know that I would need to install a pulse fuel pump. What I don't know is which lines from what hooks up to the lines on the fuel pump. I have seen a mikuni fuel pump being used but the exact details on how to hook it up have been hard to come by. If anyone else has a better idea than using the mikuni I am all ears to hear what to do. This is my first outboard motor and I know basically nothing about them. I will also need to know where I can get the single line male connector that installs on the motor itself.

Thanks for the help.

look at duckworks.com I think Max Warziniak has an article on how to do it. Basically, you take off the carb and intake manifold (making sure you get every screw and don't pry on the intake--there's a couple of hard to find screws, even one inside the intake itself). Then, you take out the check valve inside the manifold, and use a vacuum plug or whatever to block off one of the holes. This will change the setup to make a vacuum pulse instead of a putting out pressure. Then you put the intake manifold back on, and hook your vacuum pulse line from the pump to the nipple on the intake. You'll need a 3-line fuel pump. The minkuni is good, the cheapo plastic briggs and strattons will work fine.

I have already seen that video about 5 tmes and no where in it does the fellow show where or how he hooked up the lines to the pump. I will be sure to check out the duckworks site again and try to search for that fellow you mention. I really do appreciate the help I am getting in this forum and from people like you.

I personally do not like the method of modifying the intake manifold, UNLESS we are dealing with a 5.5hp where you have to.

I have done a dozen of the ADS, and much prefer to tap the bypass cover and use a Briggs and Stratton pump. My reason for this is that the Mikuni is a tad large for the AD, sizewise, it fits under a QD carb fine, but does not have a suitable mounting location on the AD.

Here is a pic of the BS pump I just did on an AD. Do not pay attention to the line routing on it, it is wrong in the pic. Remove the bypass cover before you drill/tap it, you dont want shavings in the powerhead. The top mounting screw uses the original bypass cover bolt hole, the bottom mounting screw I made a plate out of aluminum to connect the pump mounting screw to the bypass cover hole, it will not perfectly line up unfortunately. You can barely see it in the pic.

Alot of pump have arrows on them to indicate flow. However, if they do not, use the suck/blow test. If you can blow through the nipple but not suck, it is the inlet. If you can suck through the nipple but not blow, it is the outlet. If you can suck and blow, it is the pulse.

Get your minds out of the gutter, this is a family friendly site. :)

HighTRim's method is definitely the best. For some reason, I was thinking about the 5.5 instead of the 7.5 which has bypass covers. It's easier, looks better, uses less fuel line, and less opportunity for warping the intake and making/buying new intake gaskets.

I think he covered the routing on the pump as well.
