I have a 2002 Crownline 202br whose Faria tach has quit working. I don't want to spend anymore $ on it this year, but would like to know my rpm's. I would like to buy an inexpensive digital or analog tach to use and maybe down the road try to find a matching Faria tach. I don't know where the factory sensing wire attaches. I can see the coil and would like to be able to just attach sensing wire to the negative coil wire. I'm uncertain of the distributor or ecm accessibility and hope sensor wire can will work on coil. Is it possible to wrap a spark plug wire for signal? I guess I could just look for grey Mercruiser signal wire under dash and try to connect to that. Thnx in advance for any advice for a knucklehead.

Even a non-matching tach is a very simple install and as cheap or cheaper than some thing you are going to hang in the engine bay and not be able to see. The wire you are looking for is on the "S" terminal at the back of the tach. You are making a simple task a potential problem. Tachs are not budget busters and one of the least expensive things you can buy for a boat. Plenty of on-line sites for used/new/NOS part. Google is your friend.
