I've had a leak from this seal for awhile, so I pulled the engine and dropped the oil pan. I've pulled out the rear main bearing cap and that gives me access to the bottom half of the split seal, but I can't figure out how to get the top half out. Do I have to remove all the main caps and drop the crank? This isn't covered in the online manual I downloaded: http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/13/13A3R2.PDF. Is there an online manual that covers engines with split seals?

thanks

No just get something and feed that half around the crankshaft but do not scratch the crank. The new seal will come with a plastic tool to install the new one,it shows how on the package.

We used to use a screw and just thread it into the thickest part of the seal and pull it out, sometimes a push on one end while pulling with the screw, just be careful not to do something stupid and nick up the surfaces, and you want to stagger the ends so they end up inside the caps and not right on the seems.

It gets worse--Now there's corrosion damage to the bearing surface.

Thanks for your help. I found a new problem, so I'm starting a new thread.
