How to install the starter on a Volvo Penta?

I need to install a starter on a 1986 Volvo Penta AQ225E. Problem is that the old starter was not on the boat so I have no frame of reference as to what goes where.

Anyone know where I might find a guide for this without buying a new manual?

Thanks.

So I guess I don't get to tell you "the exact opposite it came off"?:D

Boy, take all the fun out of it why don't ya.:(

Have you tried the "adults only section"?

Sorry for being a party-pooper, Thad. Went to the adults section first but no joy.

That is a small block V8 GM engine right? with the distributor at the back of the engine? The starter bolts up to the block at the back where the flywheel is. If you are looking at the front of the engine it is on the left side. The bolts are special though, best to get the correct knurled ones.

As far as wiring, you really need to get a wiring diagram, should be able to go to the Volvo Penta site, choose the continent then go to Parts and Service and do a publications search.

Perfect! Found it exactly where you said, Maclin.

One thing I noticed in the docs was that this engine (the 225E) is an "Automatic". Any ideas on what that's about?

Thanks.

The AQ stands for "AquaMatic" ... that is all I can think of.

Ayuh,... Now you to Look to see if the starter's Bolt Pattern is Straight across, or Staggered....
That's the 2 basic flavors of Starters that'll Fit a SBC...
