So, did you get your ignition problem solved on that 6R74?

As for the telltale, follow the instructions on the page you went to. It's no big deal, and there really isn't an easier or better way.

You guys were right i put a set of new points and condensors, still didnt run right. so i continued your guys suggestion and i removed the coils to switch them around and low and behold the coil with a hair line crack had a tiny pin hole that was arching dircetly to the armature plate. thank you much. now i have very little water coming out at idle. once i rev it up to about 1-2k it steams pretty good for a couple seconds and cooler water comes out. i took the lower unit apart and all rubber grommets are good and dont know what else to check? what do you think? i installed coils off of a 1958 QD-19 that were good. and it runs great. im looking to install a pee stream to make sure im getting water at idle. does water usually not come out at idle? or am i idling it to low?

Have you replaced the impeller in that outboard? If not, that would be the next step. Most of the water comes out near the prop. The holes are just an exhaust bypass, so some water comes out of there, too.

A tell-tale is nice, and my 92 6hp has one. I like to be able to glance back to see that water is circulating.

In the meantime, while your outboard is on the boat and you're on the water, try pulling the cowling off and running around, using the engine normally. Once in a while, reach over and put your hand on the cylinder. You should be able to leave it there for a few seconds before it gets too hot.

Also, if you're running the outboard in a barrel, you should have the water level well up the leg. I like to put mine in so the water is halfway up the leg. If it's too shallow, you won't get good circulation.

You don't actually need a tell-tale. If you have a good impeller and the water passages are clear and the thermostat is working, you'll be fine. Just check the temperature from time to time with that hand test.

At idle, some water should splatter out of the relief holes. At higher throttle settings, there will be more. It's not a precision thing, but you do need to have the leg of the outboard deep enough.

i installed an impeller, head gasket and thermostat. i pulled the leg off twice to make sure that i had the water tube hooked up and i did. this is my trolling motor so its off the boat. has anyone tapped i pee hole in the thermostat cover before? or is the exhaust cover plate a better location

Re: how to intall a telltale pee stream on a 1974 6 hp johnson

Hi.I had the same problem, very week water strema at low rpm,i chnged impeler, gromets and uncrew powerhead from midsection and the top from powerhead to cler water paseges.but this did'nt solve my problem.
at the end i found out that waterpump was loosing underpresure and did'nt took much water.the place that underpresure was missing was waterpump housing that cover waterpump impeler.beetwin waterpump impeler there was smal space.so i instal very thin bronze washer(iner dimension 11mm and outer dinension 23 mm, thick about 0.5 mm)and problem is gone.water is floating as river from my tale outlet at low rpm and high rpm.
and i do'nt need a peehole but if you would like to have one here is site:

what part of the water pump are you talking about? a washer above the impeller or below the impeller. where is water leaking out of ? this might be my fix as well, but please explain yourself a little bit better. thanks

Most of the original water pumps (part number 0382797) never worked very well and have been upgraded to the replacement pump (part #0763758). You may want to consider the upgrade if you are still using the metal housing.

Hi.
I'm talking about the washer above the water pump impeler.(between impeler and water pump housing-washer dimension 0.5x11x23 mm
look at site http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/parts/32553.cfm
this washer I put between part 18 and 16.
but i remaind you that should be verythin( mine is thick about 0.5 mm) but resist friction,I use bronze washer and that can be good if it will be teflon washer.
in my case this solution is working preety good

and i remaind you that if your engin will overhit that the paint colour wiil change from green to brown red in area where powerhead is conected with midsection.
what about your termostat valve?
did you change the head gasket and clear the water cover around engine's cylinder.sometimes its good solusion if this idea with washer will not work
