Many times on setups as old as yours...you open the control box and have a look at the wiring...you're apt to be shocked by the condition of the wires...often times the corrrosion is so bad that the insulation just flakes of the wires leaving all sorts of short-circuit possibilities. It's amazing that it works at all.....
