I would love to see a picture so it would be easer to answer your question. I have see some people use a strip of aluminum and put the registration numbers on that and attach that to the boat somehow.

I wouldn't attach lettering directly to the tubes. This is what I did.

West Marine has a kit that comes with lettering and paint that is suppose to stretch and contract when you inflate and deflate, also comes with a brush.
Know anything about the quality of these kits ?, or if in fact they do as advertized ?
Thanks

Yes, they work just fine. I think the stenciling looks ugly, but it works. It's also impossible to get off if you ever want to register your boat in another state.

The attached board might be fine in inland lakes or waters, but homeland security rules dictate that boat identification must be permanently attached to boats in coastal waters. Placards and similar methods of attaching vessel identification are not acceptable in locations like here in San Diego. Check your local regs.

I used a 3" stencil kit from Home Depot and "permanent" markers. Clean the surface thoroughly, and run a strip of masking tape to establish a line then tape on the stencils. Use a Sharpie marker to outline each letter then fill in with a large tip marker - fill in the stencil gaps too. Looks great but you'll probably have to go over it with the marker every year. It's easy to do and easy to remove with solvent when needed.

A buddy of mine had some stencils made, then used what looked to be either liquid electrical tape or that coating you put on tool handles to paint the letters on his RIB. Its rubbery so it stretches well.

fakeplay, No the marker won't come off in salt water but will fade due to wear and sun after a while. A snap to renew though.

Thanks, seems to be the cheapest way out of it.

Can you not just use the vinyl cut lettering? I know it bends and folds on the banners I make. If you want to try it out, PM me your registration numbers and address. I cut vinyl at home. I'll send you a set of registration numbers. You can try it, if it doesn't work, let them get a little sun or a hair dryer and peel them off.

HeloMech, the important thing is do they expand and retract, such as when filling the boat with air and also deflating. If they just bend they won't work.
But, thanks for the offer.

Hm, I would think they would do ok if they were warm, though if they're cold, I doubt it.

Re: How to letter a pvc boat

I asked the man in West Marine, what would work best, he showed me a plastic panel that you attach letters to. The problem I see with this, its suppose to hold on with suction cups. I would really worry that it would come off. Plus how well can a suction cup adhere to PVC?
