I want to get started on prep work for an upcoming paint job, but not sure how to mask off the area to be sanded and painted.
I assume you would want to mask the area to sand, so you don't sand part of the hull your not going to paint. But, then you will have a rough tape edge, so do you pull that tape after sanding, and apply new tape and hope it's on the exact same line when you are ready to paint.
Or do you forgo tape all-together until it's time to paint, and leave a small area un-sanded?

I plan on doing the roll and tip method.

Ayuh,... 1st off,... Don't tape Nothin' til you're ready to go to work,...
Marking tape, left On, in a short time becomes IMPOSSIBLE to remove....

You either have to sand Very Carefully, or tape off whatever lines you wanta use...
If you tape off for sanding, 'n tear up the edges, just run another strip of tape for a new edge, then Paint...

With Rustoleum, I usually pull the tape the following mornin',...
2pt-urethanes, I pull the tape as soon as the gun has been cleaned...

What paint are you using ??

Typically you would tent boat..Buff your repair area out 2-3' away from the repair zone..then mask and repair..backmask..prime..unmask..prep..paint..then buff and blend..

Roll and tip..No tape..no masking..Tent boat..buff out 6-12" away from repair..repair..prime..sand/prep..roll and tip till 2" off your prepped area..buff and blend.

Then again I dont know the specific repair your doing ( or material )..This is a general rule of thumb thing..

Re: How to mask for painting topside.

Thanks for the input.
So far it looks like I will be using Rustoleum. Still need to look into Sherwin Williams. I read they have a good topside paint.
But my goal is to go from the faded green/teal, to black right up to the rub rail.

You only need to sand to scuff...not remove the teal.
So, I wouldn't use tape to sand/scuff.
When I would paint it, use the green tape.

When it hardens, wet sand the tape line, and buff both the white and black.
Don't leave the tape line!

Re: How to mask for painting topside.

This is how and what would do/use..

Tent off the boat..
Use Good Quality masking tape ( like 3m 2040 tape ) on the rubrail and hardware.
Tape off the bottom tape edge with Green Fine Line ( I know others have said use the green tape..but there are 2 kinds..one is more like masking tape the other is like plastic tape .. YOU WANT the Plastic green fine line ).
Sand the hull with whatever grit your primer or paint asks for ( primer normally 120grit and paint normally 320ish ).
Carefully sand along the tape edge if your using the 120ish grit.
Scotch bright along the tape line edge ( this wont damage the tape ) . Also scotch bright the Tape Itself so the paint will stick to it. You will get a sharper line doing this.
Wipe/clean/tack and paint.

I wouldnt sand and buff that line off..you wont be able to anyways. You will allways have a hard tape line from the paint application..
