I need a rod storage solution... (I always have at least enough poles with me  to fish for blues/ stripers and bottom fish - 2 trolling/4 spinning/ 2 baitcasters) I want to mount pvc pipe horizontally under my gunnel to the rough (painted) fiberglass hull of my 16' Silverline. I figure I can mount 3 poles facing aft and 3 facing forward. The hull is single thickness fbgls so I cant just srcew it in without having holes thru my hull. I see my choices as either gluing a shaped ( to follow the curve of the hull) piece of wood to the hull fore and aft and screwing into that or gluing the pvc directly to the hull.

I removed the padded panel that encloses the narrow shelf which runs from the windshield to the transom.

I'm sure some of us (you) have done this. What worked? what didn't?

My wife tells me fishing season is almost over so I guess I'll have time for this project.

thanks, dave of the wewiantic, wareham, MA

BusterBlue,

I mounted some Attwood rod racks (plastic frames with the stiff foam inserts) to my single-walled fiberglass under the gunwale, very similar to what you propose. I used small through-bolts and sealed with 3M 5200 (like crazy charlie said). The lower through-bolts are under the waterline. This was 6 months ago and I have had no leaks.

Granted, the bolt heads are visible on the outside of the hull...but then, my boat isn't for looks. If I had wanted to do a "pro" job I would have glassed some vertical wood strips to the inside of the wall, painted or carpeted over, then screwed my racks into those.

I would say glass them in with some epoxy and cloth. I personally made rod racks out of wood and screwed them to the inner vertical surface of the gunnel. The forward rack was just holes, the back rack is slots with a bungee strap. I just put the rods in, apply the bungee strap, and all stays put.

This is not a high stress joint - seems to me working with glass/resin is overkill. 5200 sounds good to me. Just make sure you sand off the paint,
and allow several days cure time. No one ever accused 5200 of drying too fast.

Screws through the outside (nuts on the inside) might not be unattractive using ss screws with finish washers. That would be my second choice.
