Good day, My Omc metal gas tank has been sitting under the sun for the past 2 short Canadian summers and paint is now scalling on it. I checked inside and I dont see any rust, It's been kept almost full with a 50:1 mix most of the time. I would like to paint it so it looks like new again. Is there a special procedure of paint to use since there can be gasoline dripping on it ? Should I use primer first ? Are decalcs available ? My first thought was to use one coat all purpose Tremclad metal paint but I suspect there may be better ways. Thank you for your feedback.

I'm sure they are steel. Otherwise they wouldn't rust. Just put a magnet on it! Steel will require ordinary primer -don't need acid etching type.

The paint I recommended is fuel prrof, but the decals are not, so you need to seal them. NYM sells sealer as well.

Would "Tremclad" rust paint do the job on a gas tank ? This one coat no primer paint makes it sound easy, unexpensive, and spray cans available next door ... LOL .

Never heard of it. Experiment on a piece of metal, then pour gas on it after it cures. Or, just paint the tank and re-do it next year if it doesn't hold.

Just don't put the decals on till you're sure. They cost 5x more than the paint.

Where can the white vinyl be found that is on the bottom seam of the tank?
