I have removed the transom wood from my 59 Smith Craft and am looking to replace it and match the height of the 73 johnson 50hp i have can you guys help me figure how to go about properly measuring the new wood to be cut? Thanks any help is appreciated. I'd like to stray from using a Jack Plate due to a t&&t unit in the future. Thanks!

This should give you the information you need...

Just reverse the numbers. If you measure from the cavitation plate to the bottom of the mounting bracket and it's between 15-17 inches then your transom should measure that same height from the bottom of the keel to the top of the transom. If it's 20-22" then the same for the Transom.
