Hi,
I have a Mercrusier 260 alhpa 1 it has that all in one throttle/shifter/trim stick

what is the proper way to use the push in button for shifting in and out of forward/revers/neutral ? I get alot of grinding and a big clunck when shifting ...it gets nerve racking when parking at the dock in the marina when you need good fast response and you end up fiddling around to get it in the gear you need . I am not sure I am pressing the grear change buttom properly

thanks

99% of the Merc shifter has the button as a Neutral only button.
From the neutral only position you push the button and move your throttle forward to increase engine speed, while still in neutral.
When the button is out, you shift gears. Put it into gear with authority, don't go slow, should only have one clunk and be in gear.
If you shift slow, that causes the grinding, DON'T Do That!
Also make sure your rpm is around 700 rpm, no higher than 750 when shifting.
