Re: How to properly shim gears in stringer outdrive
I think I've looked everywhere, including sterndrive. Bottom line is this: if I can do a good job by checking rolling torque and backlash between gears without the special tools, then that is by far the most inexpensive way to go. The real question is can I do it, and are there specific things I need to know and do for it to work properly.
I've had every nut and bolt off this engine/drive unit, rebuilt the engine, later replaced all the bearings when I developed an oil leak that I didn't know about, etc, etc. I have worked on engines, fixing and rebuilding, for a long time, so getting into the gears is not that huge a deal.
