How to protect the trailer harness

We trailer our boat at minimum 2x each year (<- storage, -> storage) and for the rest of the year the trailer wiring harness is rarely used.

I find that every spring it's a challenge to have the lights work with the trailer because the salt and grit have corroded the plugs on the vehicle. How can I protect the harness? We just bought a new car and I want to try my best to make the towing of the boat as easy as possible.

I've heard that petroleum jelly is good stuff. Sound about right?

I'd go with dielectric grease or CRC Battery Terminal Protector spray

Just use an old female end and put on it like a cap for the trailer and a male end for the tow vehicle.
Use a little grease when you put it on and all will be good to go when you need it.

Spinner has it right on. I do exactly the same.
That method is seen a lot around this area as well as we get a lot of snow, ice and salt during the winter.

On the cheap, a ziploc bag and a twist tie works. That's what I use on the trailer-side connection.

I got one of those magnetic hide-a-key cases, and notched the end. When I'm not trailering, I put the flat connector in it with the wires going through that notch, close the cover, and the magnets hold it to the frame. No, it's not water tight, but it's good enough that the connectors stay ok.

If you get rust.corrusian (sp), in ot on your connectors, you can also use CRC QD Electronic Cleaner. It's $5-6.00/can at Auto Zone, etc.

Ditto......I attached a spare female plug to the trailer itself so the its always there to plug the lights into when not in use. 3 salty winters and 0 problems so far!
