So I have a heck of a project going and I need to pull my engine to get at the transom.

It is a 1991 90hp Johnson sitting and it is sitting on a 1991 Sunbird SeaCore 1732.

I have a thread here that I have started about my restore. One of these days I need to move it to the right topic.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=404623

Anyway, I googled it a bit and searched around here and cant seem to find the right answer. Under the hood there is no obvious hooks. I am to paranoid to just wrap a strap around it and lift.

My awesome neighbor will come down and lift it with his tractor but until I find out the right way I am a bit stuck. My plan is to pull it, put it in the back of my truck and drive down to our Mechanics place and drop it off with him for some fixing.

Thanks!

Here is what I did with mine.

I took a tow strap and wrapped it around the midsection, put one through the other(choked it) and hooked it up to a cherry picker and put tension on it. Then I disconnected all the wires and cables, then removed all the bolts. It did want to tip forward as the cherry picker lifted it off, but I was able to hold onto it and keep it more or less verticle until it was clear of the boat. Then I eased it down into a horizontal position and was able to lay it in the bed of my truck.

hope this helps!!!

strangely enough, I am wrestling with the same issue myself this evening, only my motor is an '84 Johnson 90hp V4. Do you have a bracket like this up top, near the flywheel? I was wondering if that was the lift point?

You will need to fashion a lifting eye that will attach to the three holes in the flywheel.

You will need three Grade 8, 5/16 fine screws.

You can make a suitable rig with a harmonic balancer puller.

Yes, this helps a lot! I think I just need to confidence to jump in and do it. Well and time it right so the neighbor can be here with his tractor. I have quite the white trash setup outside in the driveway. I dont think I have graduated to Redneck setup just yet :D

I dont have a garage / shop to work in so we setup one of them 12x12 white canopy tents. It was covering part of the boat but now most of our work is done outside of the boat so its sits just behind. Keeps the hot sun off my head anyway.

Supposed to be some high winds today and them winds dont really go well with a glorified tent. I might have to take a picture and post it. We dropped the tent to where the edges are just 3 feet (give or take) off the ground but yet I can still go in there and stand up because of the angle of the canopy.

So it more or less looks like a white trash redneck smurf house right at the moment :D

Ezeke, thanks man. I will do some calling around and see if I can find that puller. Seems like I used one once years ago when I was working on my old truck.

Is there a particular one that you think would work better?

No, just use your search engine for "harmonic balancer puller". You should find some around $20. Home Depot or Lowes will have the screws - none of the kits seem to have the right size or if they do the count is wrong. You will probably need a few washers.

I will be pulling my 87' Johnson 90 tomorrow. Doesn't have the hoist loop on top like my 84' does. I plan on trying a 6 foot tow strap run under the power head with a chain hoist. Mounted a 4x4 to the collar ties in my garage and plan on putting two posts under that about 4 feet apart. I'm sure this should lift the 300lbs!
