I have a 48v battery bank (54V Float) That I would like to rig up an alternator to charge. Looking to get 40amps DC at 54v

Can you run regular alternators in series? or modify to get a higher voltage?

He's not talking amps, he's talking volts...

What runs on 48 volts? Or if you're stepping it down, what needs so much power?

The easy answer to your questions is YES!
You can change the VDC of your alternator from 12-16 VDC
Normally about 13.8 VDC
And yes you can put the output DC in series to get 54 VDC.
But why?

They already make 48 VDC alternators. Heavy equipment.
They peak at 54 VDC to top off if you will.
And the cost will be about the same.

But that alternator will take about a 13-14 HP gas motor to run it.

I've been working on heavy equipment for 20 years... never seen a 48V system.... lotsa 24V.
EDIT - I just googled "48V alternator" - apparently I have led a sheltered career, Electrodyne make 48V alternators for heavy equipment, buses etc...
