How to raise motor if power tilt fails?

Hello,

Just a fear of mine here... Call me paranoid but I have an 86 Evinrude 90hp and if the tilt ever fails on me, I will not be able to get the boat on the trailer. Is there a way to manually lift the engine in the event that the tilt fails? I don't think my battery is being charged, maybe a bad rectifier? And I just want to know what to do if I can't get the engine up!

Thanks!

The only way I know of is to crack open the lines to the pistons, and release the hydraulic pressure, then you can manually tilt it...

This will, however, cause the tilt fluid to spew out, so you want to have a catch pan handy.

Other than that, I dont know of any way to do it, you can't compress a fluid, so without the trim pump, the pressure has to be released.

Maybe on modern systems, there is a valve or something that can be opened to allow the fluid to return to the resevoir... IDK on that one... sorry

On the bottom of the hydraulic pump is a relief valve. Open theis a quarter turn, and you can left the motor up. On some engines you get to this valve through a hole in the mounting braket. Don't loosen any lines.

If your motor has a hole in the mounting bracket near the water line, that will be the way to go.You will need a rather large screwdriver to place through the hole and onto the screw head.It may take several turns of the screw to be able to lift the motor.
