How to raise motor on transom

I have a 200 hp Ocean Runner on a 23 foot walkaround. I am still trying to get another 1000 rpm's out of it as it now tops out at 4500. Looking down while junior ran the boat on plane, the cavitation plate was about an inch under water. I would like to see the top of it more clearly. Question is, what is the correct way to raise the engine? Is it simply a matter of loosening the two bolts and placing a hydraulic jack under the skeg and nudging it up?

The best way is with a lift or hoist of some sort (well, actually the best way is to push the button on the hydraulic jackplate but that's another story). Remove the 4 bolts, clean the old sealer, put on some new sealer, raise the motor with the hoist and put it back on. The top bolts go in from the inside so they'll place the motor when you put it back on. The bottom 2 can go in either direction.

I don't think I would want to jack the motor up by the skeg.

There should be an eye hook visible if you take off the cover. You can hook it up to a hoist to lift it.

I don't think that you have a built-in lifting eye. You would need to either make or buy one. It requires that the three bolt holes in the flywheel be used to bolt the lifting eye then hoist the motor up while maintaining control.

If you remove the lower cowl, which only takes a few minutes, you can also lift from under the powerhead, but it is more difficult to maintain control safely.

Here's a thread with a few ideas: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=237014&highlight=lifting+eye

If you have a trailer, it's very easy (sounds like you do). 1st block the skeg. Block the wheels so the trailer can't move, loosen the lower bolts, remove the uppers and crank away on the tongue jack until you get to the hole set you want. Replace the upper bolts (with sealer if needed), remove and replace the lowers (again with sealer, if needed) and tighten all ... done. One caution, make sure you're on pretty level ground before you start.

Did it with my T175 Etecs this spring ... took all of 20 minutes for both motors.

Richman, My '98 150HP Johnny has two built in lifting places on the block. heavy duty S hooks on a chain fit these. I drove a 1/2" lag bolt into the garage door header, looped the chain over the lag bolt, lowered the tongue of the trailer, and hooked the block as high as I could. Now loosen and remove the bolts while jacking up the trailer tongue, until the motor is at the correct height.

Re: How to raise motor on transom

Real dumb question and maybe Dhadley was trying to answer it.... I see two bolts (looking at the rear of the transom); should there not be two more bolts that I will need to access thru the access ports in the rear of the baot.=, i.e. where the bilge pumps are located?

Four bolts total per motor. Two at the top of the motor bracket in holes and two at the bottom in slots. I can't see your boat, so I have no idea what's on the other side.

My Johnny has two black plastic covers that cover the top transom bolts. These need to be unbolted for access
