In a recent post I discussed my leaking circulating pump (antifreeze not raw water) in my AQ125A Volvo Penta engine. Someone mentioned that they got a replacement from NAPA and that it was a marine pump. My local NAPA knows nothing about this but in their marine catalog found a repair kit for the circulating pump.

How difficult is it to replace the shaft seal? Do you need special equipment to press the shaft out and back in and to complete the repair?

If there is a NAPA part for a replacement? can anyone tell me the part number?

I got the pump that's for the Volvo B21 engine but just looking at it the neck looks like it wouldn't fit onto the heat exchanger.

Heellpppp

Re: how to rebuild circulating pump?

Like I said in the other post, it's a marine unit, and not from a car. Lots of people get stuff from NAPA and assume since the got something for their Chevy V8 that they also have something for a Volvo 4 cylinder marine engine.
Also, there are no repair parts for them, so forget it. Order a new (or remanned) pump.

Try dougrussell.com. They have a good source for Volvo stuff.

NAPA is no help if the parts guy doesnt have a clue about the line of marine parts they carry. They own Sierra and they have a huge catalog of marine stuff. You can order it from a NAPA store or online. Then you can just give the ****ly faced kid behind the counter a part number.

You will have to get a re-build kit from a VP dealer,
the kit is about $185.00, a new pump is about $400.
You will have to take it to a machine shop to have the seal re-placed, The shop I used charged me $60.00 to do the whole job.
You should also be aware a leaky seal will cause damage to your belt and tentioner, so it would be a good time to deal with that, I didn't and it cost me $1900.00 .
Good Luck, Ed

Just when I was all proud of my self , I re-read the question , duh!!
Well as along term rubber band engine owner, I had to re-place that pump too. Bad news , there is no re-build kit, nor are there any re-built units , so I had to get it new from a vp dealer, E-mail me if you need the part # I kept the box it came in , for future reference.
Ed.

That pump may be superceeded from what yo have EC. The new number for the pump kit (Kit includes different connection to the heat exchanger) is 3587508. List price from Volvo....... just under $250

Re: how to rebuild circulating pump?

Interestingly enough, there is an online company that has the 828023 (old part number) for sale for $189.45. I'm assuming from what DonS said, it may not work so I need to check with them on Monday to see what they are really selling.

I also found an old post on another forum from a guy from the UK who said he modified a waterpump from the Volvo B21 engine to fit up to the heat exchanger and that it worked.

EdsCab... When you said that waiting to change the pump cost you $1900 because it ruined the timing belt and tensioner were you talking about the raw water pump with the impeller or the antifreeze system circulating pump. If I can wait a little while and just keep adding an antifreeze mix to it I'd like to but if it's going to ruin other parts, I should bite the bullet, pay $250 and get a new 3587508 circulating pump.

DonS...My boat is a beater that cost me $400. What's your opinion about waiting a while before replacing the circulating pump. In your opinion, except for losing and replacing coolant, what are the other downsides?

If you can find one under the old number, that's not a problem. The new kit was designed to cover several engine/heat exchanger styles without them (Volvo) having to stock a lot of different part numbers.

Anything is possible. But suppose he had to make changes to the pump that you aren't capable of. Such as he is a welder or has access to a machine shop that you don't. Then you are stuck with the B21 pump that you messed up and still have to buy the Volvo pump.

Unfortunatly, the prices of new parts aren't based on what you paid for the boat.

Re: how to rebuild circulating pump?

DonS... That's a great one. What's wrong with these manufactures? Hey, if I only paid $400 for my boat, shouldn't they only charge me $28 for the pump. Makes perfect sense to me. Actually, being a CHEAP old SOB, I'm only trying to figure out if there are other ways of doing things but you've made a believer out of me.

Thanks for the info on the old vs new part number.
