How to remove lower unit from shift shaft?

I am trying to replace water pump in a 25hp 1989 mercury. I have lowered the lower unit, but cannot remove the shift shaft to fully separate the unit from the exhaust housing. I have the repair manual, but not much help.:mad: Can you guys help????
