Hey everyone. I did some searching but couldn't find exactly what I am looking for in the archives.

Anyway I have a 1984 40hp Evinrude I am trying to change the impeller on. I have removed the 5 bolts that hold the lower unit on and it has dropped about 1 inch down. I am assuming I need to dissconnect the shifter linkage but dont know where to do it. My last evinrude (1989 28hp) had a plate on the side that I removed and disconnected the linkage. This one does not. Because it is Sunday I can not go get a book for it. So I am posting and looking for some quick advice.

What am I missing to finish removing the lower unit? Shifter linkage?
Does the shifter need to be in a certain position?

Thanks a lot!!

I have a 1983 60hp, basically the same engine. There are 6 bolts that need to be removed which includes the trim tab. Then the shift linkage in under the bottom carb and the starter needs to be removed to get to it. Hope this helps.
