How to remove "plate" under coils on '56 Johnson

Hello. I'm having trouble replacing the coils on a '56 Johnson outboard motor. It seems that the "plate" (for lack of proper terminology) that the coils are sitting on is stuck. I've removed the screws but am afraid to keep tugging on it to remove it if it (a) can't be removed or (b) should be removed some other way. Is it possible that it's just corroded and needs a little Liquid Wrench and patience? I don't want to break anything.

Thanks in advance.

I hope that makes sense - I can try to post a picture for clarification if need be.

I don't know if this helps, but on my 67 Evinrude two screws went directly through the plate (shorter screws) into the mounting and two more (longer screws) went through the center of the coils, then also through the plate into the mounting so you needed to remove all four in order to remove the plate. There were then two additional screws through each coil into just the plate itself, so three screws in all in each coil.

Hope that helps.

'56 is the same as ttgoddard says. One long screw through each coil and one short screw buried next to each set of points go through the armature plate into the support. The support is held in place by the retaining ring. The short screws are not obvious and you must look for them. The armature plate then just lifts off with no effort.

Thank you for the quick reply. It sounds like I'm on the right path as all of the screws you have mentioned are out, so it must be that it just needs a little more muscle. Good to know that the screws go into another mount.

Thanks again!

...on second though (looking at above post) I must have missed a screw then. I'll start hunting for it tonight. Thank you.

If the 56 is similar to my 67, you also need to take off the link from the throttle which rotates the plate as you open the throttle up. I first tried to gently remove mine before I realized I had to take the link assembly off, although the plate still lifted a little it wouldn't come all the way off, just a thought from recent experience removing my plate.

Another question (just thinking ahead here) do you have any tips on how to handle the points during reassembly so that they will still work properly when I'm finished? Do the points effect the timing in any way? A little nervous about this step...

Just make sure the arm on the points that rides on the cam doesn't interfere with the cam when you lower the armature plate into place. Adjust point gap to .020" at their widest opening (you have to turn the shaft for each one to get widest opening). There is no other timing.

That armature plate and support ring should be lubricated SPARINGLY with some EP grease. Too much will liquify from vibration and squirt out, getting all over the points and you will think you have a leaking seal.
