New problem. 6hp '79 Chrysler. I removed the foot and the bolts holding down the impeller housing. The shift rod has a disconnect screw above the housing and bends so I can't slip it up and off to remove the impeller.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Clymer manual says to place motor in reverse. Remove the four bolts holding the lower unit onto the motor leg. The lower unit should drop down about a half inch or so. When the lower unit is separated you should see a screw on the shift linkage between the motor leg and the lower unit. If you do not have the motor in reverse you may not be able to see this screw.

That one came out just fine and let me seperate the foot from the rest of it. Now I have to get the rod out so I can lift the impeller housing up and over the drive shaft.

It appears that the shift shaft just screws into the Clutch shift Cam that is located just below the pump. I would count turns when removing it because it also looks to be an adjustment for the shifter as well.

That was it! It took about 9 turns. There wern't any gaskets though, just one rubber O ring for the shift rod. Thanks1

I was about to tell you that it unscrews. Hope you counted how many turns out so you can replace it the same. It will affect the shifting. If you did not count turns, try screwing it in all the way then backing out just enough to line up the two rods. There is a stepped plate and the shift shaft (that moves the dog clutch) is spring loaded. The bottom of the plate is the smallest step so the shift shaft is in forward position there. If you have trouble going into reverse or neutral, then back it out a little more.

Re: how to remove shift rod

Thanks. I decided to go ahead and get the whole kit instead of just the impeller. The old impeller looks good although the pump plate had some wear on it, but if that was not the reason the motor stops every five miutes to cool down...then I have to find another reason for the overheating. By then I should have the manual or a 4-sale sign.
