How to remove spring clip in tiller handle on Johnson 9.9

I want to remove the throttle cable from the tiller handle of a 1990 Johnson 9.9. See photos. It's a wire spring holding the cable trunion in a socket. Prying out with a screwdriver, as in the photo, does not seem to work. The wire has a couple of bends underneath, but I can't squeeze them to release the clip. Ideas? Thanks.

So I forced it out with the screwdriver and broke the ends off the spring clip. Bummer. Didn't want to do that. Now I have to find a source to get a new one.
