1972 40hp Johnson motor 40EL72 on 1968 13' Boston Whaler Sport. I need to remove the starter to have it rebuilt at a local shop. I've removed all the bolts I see. Can someone give me step by step directions or refer me to a source for instructions. I've done an extensive web search. Boat belongs to a friend who has cancer and I'm trying to get the boat in the water for some pleasure rides in the near future. I don't have a manual. Any help would be appreciated. (This is my first post).

Disconnect the battery.
Remove the cable going to the stud on the starter.
Take the 3 bolts out of the side of the starter mounting bracket.
Take the bolt out of the front of the mounting bracket (by the carb).
Take the starter off.

But what is exactly wrong with the starter? Most "starter problems" end up being bad cables, poor connections, or battery issues.

Yes, check your electical connections first, before you condemn the starter. This is more often the issue with starter problems.

First disconnect the battery (as a rule of thumb, you should do that before you do anything to your engine).
There are schematics readily available on the internet so you should check on those by selecting your year and horsepower.
You want to remove the cables, then the bolts starting with the lowest first...so that you have the top bolt holding the starter. Keep one hand on the starter after you've loosened the last bolt...and remove the last bolt with you other hand. If you have verified that you have removed all fasteners from your starter and it is still stuck, then GENTLY tap the body of the starter away from the powerhead with a rubber mallet while holding the starter with one hand.

These are not technical instructions...just what has worked for me.

the starter and bracket come off as one unit....might not be obvious at first glance

Only one bolt came out on the side and the nuts came off the other bolts. I'll start with that. The last person that took the boat out had to pull start the motor and told me it needed a starter when it pulled it to my house for me to "refurbish". He had the boat for several years and is very knowledgable.

Do you mean the bottom bracket the starter sits on---has three nuts? I'll try that and ADK's suggestion to GENTLY tap. If all else fails I'll get my husband to help. Appreciate all you suggestions.

Thanks AITn. I'll go to diagrams at marineengine.com and try that tomorrow. I want to get the starter out tomorrow and in the shop Monday.

The bottom support bracket that runs under the carburetor is held on with two bolts running through the intake manifold. Those two bolts need to be removed.

1 nut holding elect cable
3 bolts or nuts on side of bracket.
1 big bolt on front of bracket, above the carburetor
2 bolts through bottom support, through intake manifold, under carburetor
1 bolt holding recoil starter ( you MAY have to completerly remove the recoil starter so pinion gear will clear, maybe not)

It should slide off the studs easily.
