Please bear with questions from a n00b trying to do what I thought would be simple and straightforward! I have tools and auto repair skills, this is my first boat.

I am trying to remove the lower leg of my 1979 DT50 to replace the water pump impeller and gasket(s). The shop manual says "...remove the grommet from the starboard side of the lower support. Insert an appropriate socket wrench and remove the clutch shaft nuts..." but there is NO grommet I can find anywhere.

I found a couple of forums that touch on this (here and here for example), but they are old, and not "spot-on" as far as answers.

I took a look at the Browns Point parts diagrams for the 1977-1979, and while I was able to see the nut in question in the diagram, I don't know how to get to it. The manual just shows the linkage floating in space, not where it is in the housing(s) of the motor.

Anyone care to point me to the right location?

Second question, how do I avoid the (apparently) dreaded "drive selector shaft has come out of the lower leg" problem mentioned here and here?

Are there other things I should know about when removing the gearcase that could make more headaches if done wrong? I don't want to have to tear down more of the motor (like the gearcase) by making a mistake I don't know to avoid.

Thanks in advance!

....Not sure what the problem is, but I can't seem to edit my post. After I posted I realized that the second question was too vague. (EDIT: Now editing is working, so I fixed the question, but I can't figure out how to delete these extra posts!)
