how to remove the lower unit on an out board engine

hi i have a jonhson 1982 200 v6 outboard engine and the other day the engine wouldnt go into gear and i have tried to remove the bottom unit but the connecting gear rod wont come undone can anyone tell me how to remove it and if you might know wut the problem might be thanks<br /><br />jr

Howdy, Jr.<br /><br />PLEASE don't attempt to work on an outboard without a manual.<br /><br />There are several bear traps in there that can really ruin your day, as well as your engine.<br /><br />Aftermarket manuals are available at the Repair Manuals link at the bottom of this page.<br /><br />Your original problem could be in the control box, cables, shift linkage or gearbox. Find out which before you start tearing your engine apart.<br /><br />Good luck.
