Hi guys. I had my 1999 Mercruiser 7.4L MPI engine overhauled and want to know how to go about testing it before I put it back in the boat. I know how to hook up the water for cooling but not sure about gas and ignition. Also anything I should pay close attention to? Thanks.

completly assemble the engine just as it was ready to install.
make a frame out of 4x4 blocks to support the engine mounts and the bell housing mounts.
lag screw the mounts to the frame.
attach a 12v battery to ground and the starter battery terminal. attach the fuel line to the filter assy using an outboard portable tank, prime the fuel system.
attach some 2ft long pieces of 4 inch ex tubing to the risers.
attache the water hose to the seawater pump inlet.
look in your merc manual at the pin out for the main harness connector, jump the purple to red with alligator clip jumpers.
turn on the water and momentarily jump red to yellow red with a seperate jumper.
you can use either a remote oil pressure guage on the sender wired to the sensor and the battery or use your multimeter and watch for a large change in resistnce when the engine starts.

Don S posted a good post on making a homemade remote starter switch using an old wiring harness: Making your own remote starter switch
