How to run engine out of water?

I recently got for free a boat with a '71 Johnson 100 HP motor. I have already ordered a service manual for it. I would like to go through the motor and give it a tune-up, rebuild the carbs, and replace the water pump impeller along with some misc other things.

When the time comes to make sure the motor runs how should I go about starting it while out of the water? I have heard of people using trash cans filled with water and also of the hose connectors that clamp over the water intake ports. Where can I get the hose fitting/clamp? I don't know of any marine stores in my area. Which is the preferred method for this 100 HP Johnson? Thanks.

Just make sure you fill the can with enough water to cover the intakes on the lower unit.

Either way works well. Just make sure, as was suggested, that you have the water intakes covered. You can get muffs here to run it on a hose. But if you have cranky neighbors, it's a bit loud....

Motor Flusher

Any Wal-Mart will have the flush muffs. Remember to not rev the engine more than about 2000 rpm on the muffs...runaway 2 strokes are not for the squeemish!
Have fun!

Oh...and welcome to iboats!!! :D :D

Dave

Runaway 2-strokes...Ah yes!

Reminds me of my first Bultaco race bike. Definately not for the faint hearted!

Dang Crusty, I almost forgot about the Bultaco. That brings back good memories. Some painful ones, too... :D

I think I would opt for the trash can...a big one... to run the engine in. Least you will get some back pressure against the cylinders and have some idea of how it's going to run in the water.

Rick....what the heck is a Bultaco? I'm no bike enthusiast as you can tell.

mufff are fine, but final adjustment need to be made with back pressure from the lower unit being submerged. how long has this engine sat before you go it, when was the water pump, impeller changed.
