how to set spark plug tester

i have seen setting the spark plug tester to 7/16 for tuning engine, how is this done? i have an inline tester that does not say anything about this. it runs on the indication in the clear glass if there is spark or weak spark or no spark.

You can buy an adjustable open airgap spark tester for around $10.00 from most parts houses.
