I have a 1985 Evinrude XP150 that I would like to set / check the total timing.

What is the best way for the home enthusiast / hobbyist to set the timing on a Cross-flow?

Since I don't have a test wheel or a tank large enough house my engine.

My backyard procedure is as follows.
I remove all the spark plugs, disconnect the timer base and spin the motor with the starter while holding the timer bast to full advance.

With all the spark plugs removed the starter will spin the motor quite fast. I then monitor the spark with a timing light and adjust the timing accordingly to 28 BTDC.

Is this method ok or should I keep the boat strapped to the trailer and back her in the water at a boat ramp and set it there. The only reason I have not used a boat ramp is bacause it's not that many around here that are not busy.
