I have a 1985 Evinrude XP150 that I would like to set / check the total timing.

What is the best way for the home enthusiast / hobbyist to set the timing on a Cross-flow?

Since I don't have a test wheel or a tank large enough house my engine.

My backyard procedure is as follows.
I remove all the spark plugs, disconnect the timer base and spin the motor with the starter while holding the timer bast to full advance.

With all the spark plugs removed the starter will spin the motor quite fast. I then monitor the spark with a timing light and adjust the timing accordingly to 28 BTDC.

Is this method ok or should I keep the boat strapped to the trailer and back her in the water at a boat ramp and set it there. The only reason I have not used a boat ramp is bacause it's not that many around here that are not busy.

The best way is to check timeing on trailer at full throttle. If its to bussy then mabey try geting on ramp after dark. with a buddy along to handel controls.

When your setting static timeing in drive way. It should be set at 4* less than what manual calls for.

If it calls for 28* WOT then set at 24* the electronics make up the other four.

Good luck!

I have a 89 GT 150 that I wanted to check time on this week.It has a 24Raker.It wouldnt turn much over 3000rpm while being restrained on the trailer.I read that somebody said it need to be untied. At 3000,tied up,mine sparked at 20*BTDC.I dont know if this helps or not,it might.

As a wise-man once said; whatever your max advance is on that V6, set the static timing at 4 degs. retarded from that point.
Example: If max timing is to be at 28, set it at 24 with the starter.
Joe Reeves and Dhadley are the wise-men....
