how to set timing?

I'm trying to set the timing on my Volvo (305 Chevrolet) and am confused. The manual calls for 8 degrees basic and 30 degrees @4200 rpm. That's simple enough, but how do I read the notched tab on the timing gear cover?
The tab has graduated marks from 0-12. But the dampener also has a sticker on it with the graduations marked off from 0-45 degrees. The sticker has green mark at 8 and at 30, but I'm not sure where line up the mark on the tab.
Anybody been through this on a Volvo?

thanks
Rick

Re: how to set timing?

Try to borrow a good timing light that has an electronic advance feature on it like a Snap-on unit. Set it for 8 degrees and line up the groove on the damper with the 0 on the tab. Then set the timing light advance to 30 degrees and line up the groove with the tab again (at the appropriate rpm). Spend the time to mark the damper with those positions and you're set.

use 0 degree mark on tab and 8 degree mark on harmonic balancer to check base timing at idle. use 0 degree mark on tab and tape on balancer to check total advance at around 3000-3200 rpm. there may be more involved in checking base timing if you have electronic advance.

Re: how to set timing?

Thanks guys. As much as I'd love a new tool, I'd rather spend the money on an electronic conversion kit. My trusty old timing light will have to do.
I do appreciate that you all have pointed out to use the zero mark on the tab. Not sure why they even put the other marks on there unless it's the same tab that's used for an auto.
I'll be back at it this weekend.

Re: how to set timing?

Because not all motors are designed for a base timing of 0 degrees.. If your motor has low compression, you'll want to increase your base timing a little bit else it will bog off the line.

If you have high compression, you wanna start closer to 0 to avoid detonation during acceleration..

-- Joe

same tab as on auto engine. vp kindly added tag so you could check total advance without buying new timing light.
