How to switch from Steel to Rubber Fuel Lines?

I think I am having a vapor lock problem on my '96 Mercruiser 2bbl 5.7L. It has the steel fuel lines running from the water seperator and fuel pump to the carb. I got 1/4" NPT male to 3/8" barb fittings for the fuel pump and water sep., but what do I do for the carb? It has a fitting that contains a fuel filter/screen with a lip for the flare fitting. Can I replace that with something else, or do I have to have a nipple of steel tubing to clamp the rubber tubing to? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

it would be VERY UNSAFE TO CHANGE THE STEEL LINE any leak after the fuel pump would spray down the engine with gas makeing for a very easy disaster. it is done in steel to meet CG AND OTHER SAFTEY STANDARDS

tommays
