I have a '96 Mariner 125hp. I am interested in taking out the oil pump and plugging it and removing the reservoir.

Why? It's a 13 yr old engine and I do not want to incur any more unexpected failures. My lower unit is currently being rebuilt $$$...

So, if anyone can point me in the right direction I will appreciate it as the mechanic would charge an extra $100 to do it. Or is it just worth it to have him do it? How difficult is it? What parts will I need?

For $100. I'd let the Mechanic do it.

There is a kit that is required to block it off properly and labor so, that sounds like a great price. This must be done correctly or else you could have problems down the road as a result. I did one years ago on a Merc. 90hp and used the wrong block off plate. It allowed a slight amount of air to pass and eventually due to running slightly warmer than norm for many hours of operation I had catostrophic break down to the tune of a couple of grand in re-build.

#1 remove oil pump
#2 pull out brass gear and bushing
#3replace oil pump plug oil lines
#4 remove oil tank and oil lines to oil pump.
#5 install fuel line to fuel pump.
#6 mix gas + oil. pour in tank.
This is the way I did it ad it works fine. on 90HP merc 3cyl. 1987

Hopes this helps..
