what is the differance between crossflow and looper? 1975 115hp. johnson, what is it? also why is it that parts are all from 1978 and newer. did everything get retooled, or are parts like water pumps interchangeable throughout the years?

1975 115 will be a crossflow. If you do a search on this site you will find an old thread with a good explanation of the difference between crossflow and looper and I think there was even a diagram in the post.

The easiaest way is to look in through the spark plug hole at the top of the piston. A Looper has a flat top and the crossflow has a wedged top.

Engineers would not have a job unless they changed stuff. Some changes are for the better & some are not. Some parts carry over from model to model & year to year. For example I think the water pump impeller for a 1974 9.9 is the same one as is used today.
