Im very paranoid about a motor i just purchased.
its a 1993 60hp johnsone, ive got it at the shop right now cause it has fuel problems.
it starts, runs for 30 - 45 seconds then dies,
turn the key again starts first time goes 30 secs and dies.
again starts first time i give it power and it dies.
i called the mechanic today to see if he has had a look at it and he says he has started but all he has done is a compressiion test. its running 105-95-100. is that ok?
as far as he has said the engine looks in good condition and has obvious work done but he is hesataint to say if its had a rebuild.
the company i bought it from uses this mechanic and so far anything replaced is under warrenty(parts and labour) 30days
is there anything that i can have a look at when i get it back to tell if theres been a rebuild or to see if the guys full of ****???

thanks in advance.

Did the seller tell you it had been re-built? If so, what did they tell you was re-built or replaced in the re-build? How much time is left on the 30 day warranty? I would talk to them about extending the warranty for the amount of time it sits in the shop. If it's not running decent at the end of 30 days can you still return it for refund?

If it was done professionally the core plugs usually have a number that begins with rph. rebuilt powerhead.

take a look at the bolts.... see if any paint is chipped off them or see if it looks like they have been removed.... you can usuallly tell when someone has had a wrench on a bolt.... paint will be missing and you can see marks from the tools on the corners
