Measure from the top of the transom clamp to the anti ventilation plate. (red line to red line)

is there anything in the model or serial numbers that tell its a short shaft?

Evinrude and Johnson did have info in the model number. Not sure if Yamaha did or not, but it is possible.

Only way to tell for sure is to measure it. Most motors can be converted to have different shaft lengths.

My 95 Yam has an 'L' in the model number (TLRT) meaning it's a long (25") shaft motor. I dunno about the little ones, tho- depending oon the brand, they can have anything from 15" to 30" (sailboat auxiliary) shaft lengths.

I'm with the other guys- measure per the diagram above.

if you are buying it just ask for a measure based on the above diagram to be certain you are getting the right thing.

most of the letters that determine stuff like shaft length and trim options aren't normally in the plate numbers unless you get lucky
