How to tell if throttle cable is bad, gear shift is misaligned, or remote box prob

I think I've narrowed it down to this.. done a bit of searching but mainly:

Is the boot supposed to move at the throttle control lever independent of the metal threaded shaft the cable is in?

How to tell if I need to adjust cables at the box?

Or, if both above are ok, how do I identify the gear shift lever needs adjustment?

The engine in question is a Mercury 76 1150 outboard.

Thanks!

There is no adjustment for the cables at the control box. When you move the throttle handle forward, shift cable will pull the shift arm forward, before the crabs start to open. That is, Shift cable moves first, then throttle cable.

Normally neutral is when the shift slider is about in the middle of it's travel. Throttle handle is at 12 o'clock, shift slider is on the middle of the travel, and prop spins both ways easily.

I've verified the throttle does not move until the shift placement is fully in gear, but I still can't achieve WOT. At max according to the control box handle, I can still manually move the carbs open another 25% to WOT, but I'm afraid if I move the throttle cable adjustment barrell all the way to the end of the threading on the cable, I'm starting to move the distributor into the advanced timing...

Thoughts? Thanks!

There are adjustments for max throttle, max spark advance, idle pickup timing and idle speed, all on the distributor. Look at the three lock screws on the plate on top of the distributor. Back out the one marked throttle stop. Now if you advance the throttle handle, the carbs should open more. Set that screw to stop the throttle advance just short of the carb throttle plate stops.

Sounds to me like you need to do a link and synch. Look for the sticky that describes it. I can walk you thru it as well.
